A medieval ring village in the polder

Cadzand-Dorp is still clearly recognisable as a medieval ring village. The church stands at its centre, surrounded by picturesque lanes and old houses that define the village’s appearance.

The village was formerly known as Cadesand, meaning quay sand, and around the year 1000 it even lay on an island. Storm surges caused parts to disappear into the sea. Only after the construction of polders around 1742 did it become permanent mainland.

To this day, that history is reflected in the elongated polder landscape of salt marshes, mudflats, embankments and dykes. It tells the story of centuries of struggle against the water.
